Dear Bronwynn i too was in Broome House in 1958 i was 11 at the time my brother & i were taken there as the foster parents we were with had been treating me badly, i was in school at the time,Lloyd street county primary in hulme, when i was summoned to the headmasters office to find my welfare officer waiting there along with my brother, wondering what was going on i mouthed to my brother "what you doing here" where at my headmaster told me to just shut the door & sit down, it was then my welfare officer told me that they were going to put me in Broome house thinking she just meant me on my own i told her i did'nt want to go but then she said well your brother is going as well where at i said oh, well that's ok then so we were taken there & then, we arrived at the teatime just intime for tea, we were made to feel welcome the moment we arrived, when it was bed time i was led to the girl's dormitory & my brother to the boy's as you said in your story that you wrote we got clean clothes every day and we went to church every sunday & then walked back by a canal i think? it was Mr Hector the housefather who used to take us back to the home after church & with him being very nice & handsome too the girl's used to see who could get out of church first so we could hold his hand he just used to laugh, the head of the house then was Mr Hunt,Mr Hector the housefather, Miss Howerth our housemother she was lovely and Miss Earner she was the head housemother & very strict as well, i can remember at night not long after our bath we were allowed to watch television for a while then bed,& Miss Howerth allway's tucked us in bed & then Mr Hector used to pop in & say goodnight to us girl's as well, i also remember going to the pictures and used to look forward to getting pocket money, but as you said some money went into the bank the rest for the pictures & ice cream, but if you misbehaved then you got loss of privalidges, you had to go to bed early no tele,& if you had been really naughty like i was once i got loss of privalidges for a week,& no pocket money, that taught me a lesson very quickly, the thing i liked doing best was going to play on the swings,& seeing the animals, the dog was a spaniel called cappy, the donkey was princess,& there was agoat called Jennifer & a goose i think her name was Mirander the goat alway's tried to butt me, so i tried to stay out of it's way, lol well i dont know if you ever helped in the kitchen but i used to help mash the potatoes, i enjoyed it, when i was there as well at the christmas time they got Russ Conway, who was a big celebrity at the time his latest hit then was Side Saddle which he played as well as other tunes, he had the most beautiful smile i'd ever seen,he was really nice, i went up to him with a pencil & a piece of paper for his autograph, sadly to say iv'e no longer got it, well that's all i can think of for now but i was wondering if you were in the home at the same time as my brother & myself wouldn't that be something to really write about. ...!!.
