"Unreasonable check-in luggage policy"

While in Istanbul recently, I bought a Turkish lampstand which is about 3.5 feet tall. I was reassured by the local shopkeeper that many tourists have taken this type of lampstand as a check-in baggage, provided that it is packed well.On 22/4/2011, on flight TK1995 to Manchester, when I went to check-in, the lady at the counter refused to take this well-packed stand as my only check-in luggage, saying that this is the airline policy. She did not allow us to take the lampstand even as a hand luggage. She told us to abandon the lampstand (for which I had paid £100)in the airport, which caused me a lot of upset and distress. I even offered to pay extra money to take it as a special luggage. I was told that I can't even send it by cargo since it has to be booked three days before the trip. I was devastated, and wandered around the airport trying to find alternate ways of bringing the lampstand to Manchester.

Luckily, my sister was travelling to New York on Delta Airlines on the same day. Delta very kindly accepted this lampstand as check-in luggage, and we had to pay 50 euros for this. Now the lampstand is in New York, and I will have to spend some more money to get it back to Manchester all because of your unreasonable policy on luggage. It certainly won't help the local Istanbul economy if tourists are unreasonably not allowed to bring local souvenir lamps for which your great country is famous for. You should also try to inform the local shops regarding your check-in luggage policy, so that they won't give the wrong information to tourists. You should also review your current check-in luggage policy and inform the tourists well in advance about it. .
